Hwy. 16/Neck Yoke meeting Nov. 22

The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT)  is holding an informal  open house Nov. 22 to present the Neck Yoke Road/Hwy. 16 project. The open house style public meeting takes place at the Black Hills Energy building on Hwy. 16. 
 
A presentation of the project will take place at 5:30 p.m., with SDDOT staff available to answer questions after. This will include the proposed project and timeline schedule. 
 

Snowplow naming contest returns

Over the past two winters, the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) engaged with thousands of South Dakotans in Name the Snowplow Contests. Heavy snow and high winds were no match for cleverly named snowplows that efficiently cleared the state’s highway system.

Getting your fright on in Keystone

The Haunting of Keystone was a spooky success this year. Hundreds of visitors were treated to three different haunts,  Miners: The Black Plague  at Big Thunder Gold Mine, Psycho Circus at Rushmore Cave at Rush Mountain and House of Perpetual Panic in the Keystone Schoolhouse Museum.
 

Progress made on Palmer Gulch Fire

First reported at 12:49 p.m.  Saturday, Oct 29, the Palmer Gulch fire still burns as of press time.
 
The fire is located about three miles southeast of Hill City and is estimated at 87 acres with 40 percent containment.
 
According to Great Plains Fire Dispatch blog, “the fire is burning in heavy dead and down fuels in steep terrain. Heavy smoke and snags continue to be a concern for firefighters.”
 

Tenth annual Girlfriends' Weekend Nov. 4-6

“As women we get really busy with lives and kids and husbands and jobs, and we don’t take time to get away with the people who support us the most,” said Lorena Fries, owner of The Farmer’s Daughter. “Girlfriend relationships are vital to a woman, so having an excuse to get away from your regular life for a few hours or a few days is a beautiful gift.”
 
 
That is what Fries hopes the 10th annual Girlfriends’ Weekend will provide for women in the surrounding area and beyond. 

Lt. Gov. Larry Rhoden visits Hill City

Lt. Gov. Larry Rhoden stopped at the Hill City Cafe Oct. 28, at which time members of the community gathered to hear from him and ask a few questions. 
 
Rhoden began by sharing that he and Gov. Kristi Noem were originally going to be traveling the state together on their campaign, but they instead decided to take separate paths and cover a little more ground.

As winter approaches, National Weather Service forecasters encourage people to prepare for extreme snow and cold conditions by taking the following actions.
 
Make sure your vehicle is ready for cold temperatures by having its battery, antifreeze, wipers and windshield washer, thermostat and tires checked.
 

Courthouse seeks time capsule donations

As part of the centennial celebration of the 1922 Courthouse, Pennington County is seeking donations of items for a time capsule that will be placed in 2022 to mark the start of another 100 years of history.
 
The county is asking for citizens to donate stories, memories and mementos representative of the people, cultures and communities that make up Pennington County. 
 

Pillen added to Black Hills Military Honor Roll

The Black Hills Military Honor Roll recognizes local military members who gave their lives for freedom in our nation’s wars and raises public awareness of the Black Hills War Monument and ensure our children and grandchildren never forget the price paid for their freedom. 
 
The names of the heroes listed on the Walls of Honor at the War Monument site will ensure their service and sacrifice can be officially recognized.  Their info will also be on the BHWMA.ORG website.
