 Friday, Aug. 27
8:10 p.m.: An accident involving two vehicles, a cow and injured people was reported on Hwy. 40 either just inside Oglala Lakota County, or just inside Custer County. Many personnel from both sides of the line raced there to find...nothing and no one. Is the truth out there?
8:34 p.m.: A deputy helped a stranded motorist get going again on Hwy. 385 near the Fall River County line. The motorist had been waiting for help from their “roadside assistance” provider for several hours without result.

Nominees sought for business awards

The South Dakota Retailers Association (SDRA) is seeking nominations for the South Dakota Retailer of the Year, Restaurant of the Year and Community Service Awards.
Since 1982, the South Dakota Retailers Association has presented awards to recognize excellence in business and community service. Each January individuals and families who own or operate outstanding businesses are honored during the Association’s annual banquet in Pierre.

A hidden piece of history near Deerfield

Located approximately one mile from the Kinney Canyon Walk In Fishery, off of Slate Prairie Road near Deerfield Reservoir, lies a hidden piece of history within the Black Hills National Forest. Built in 1879, Miller Cabin is one of the oldest structures left standing in the central Black Hills.
John A. Miller, who founded the town of Deerfield and owned much of the land in the area, bought the cabin. It had previously been owned by a rancher who let travelers use the cabin as lodging when passing through. 

Child care provider funding available

Additional funding to support child care programs and the families they serve is being made available, according to the Department of Social Services (DSS). 
“To help ensure child care services remain strong for South Dakota families, the Department of Social Services is investing additional funding in our providers,” said DSS cabinet secretary Laurie Gill. “These funds will help sustain the programs that support our families and communities.”

Pandemic weight gain leads to health concerns

Many Americans, including adults and children in South Dakota, have gained weight since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that has healthcare experts worried about the potential for long-term negative physical and mental health implications. 
The extended stress experienced since early 2020 is seriously affecting mental and physical health, including changes to weight, sleep patterns and alcohol use, according to an American Psychological Association study released in March. 

Mount Rushmore Half Marathon this weekend

Join us over the weekend of Sept. 17-18 to welcome runners competing in the annual Mount Rushmore Half Marathon hosted by Vacation Races. Founded in 2012, Vacation Races hosts half marathons across the country at our nation’s national parks.
Race weekend starts Friday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m. Throughout the day, runners will visit the Race Expo at Ghost Canyon Getaway to get their race packets for the weekend. Runners are permitted to get their race packets until 7 p.m.

Butterflies to be released for a cause

A butterfly release to benefit the Front Porch Coalition will take place at Watson Park at the Keystone Hometown Celebration on Sep 18.
 A butterfly release is a symbolic way to release loss or let go of any emotional  burden or trauma that no longer serves a purpose in a person’s  life. Many also participate in a release to provide a sense of community or to see the many butterflies simultaneously let go.

HAHA will present old-time music Saturday

It’s toe-tappin’ time in Hermosa on Saturday, Sept. 18. That’s when the Hermosa Area Historical Association (HAHA) will present an afternoon of old- -time music fun from 2 to 4 p.m. The event featuring live music from the recently revived Hermosa Hillbillies and Lessons Learned will take place in the parking lot between the post office and the HAHA Museum on Main Street/Hwy. 40.
