Hispanic population thrives in one small SD town

Of the just 768 people who call Plankinton home, 163 identify as Hispanic, according to the 2023 American Community Survey. That's 1 in 5 people – far higher than the state's total proportion of Hispanic individuals, which sits at around 4 percent of the population.

“Busy hands are happy hands,” as the saying goes.  
If that’s true, the Heart of the Hills Quilters must be absolutely ecstatic. 
The guild is home to 57 members, mostly from the Hill City community with others spanning as far as Minnesota, Wyoming, Montana and even Alaska, some with over 20 years of membership. The quilters are deeply active in the community, making and donating quilts, pillowcases and even dog beds to a variety of individuals and organizations.

Isakson family are Angels in Adoption

The Isakson family of Hill City have a big heart and strong passion for fostering and adoption, which is evident through their growing family’s story.
For Jackie Isakson, fostering children had been her dream long before she met her husband, Marcus.
“It had been on my heart. I wanted to do that some day,” said Jackie. 
From the very beginning of their relationship, Jackie was upfront about her calling.
“She was like, just so you know, foster care and adoption is going to be in our future,” Marcus admitted, making Jackie laugh.

Legislators planning bills to fight mines

Three lawmakers who represent this Meade County city hope to change weak state mining laws that allowed a proposed limestone mine to be sited without notification or input by any local officials or residents.
The plan by Simon Contractors to begin mining limestone on 300 acres within the city of Piedmont and in the surrounding Black Hills came as a shock to locals, who only learned of the mine project through an October notice in a local newspaper.
Piedmont is located along Interstate 90 about midway between Rapid City and Sturgis.

Lizzie Anderson dancing on Sesame Street Live

Lizzie Anderson started her dream of professional dancing in Custer over 20 years ago. Now, she’s dancing her way across the nation on “Sesame Street Live” for her third tour.
Growing up, Anderson said being part of the performing arts wasn’t a huge thing. 
“We only had a couple of places to train, but at the same time, you see all these amazing people in Custer who make their dreams come true and go do amazing things. I always knew that I grew up in just the best town and with the most supportive community around me,” said Anderson.
