‘The Best’ coming Jan. 20

On Jan. 20, the Custer County Chronicle and Hill City Prevailer News will put a new spin on the year in review when they publish the fourth annual “The Best” featuring photos and short descriptions of many of the things that happened in Custer County, Hill City and Keystone.
This separate publication will be printed in tabloid size in color, making for a great keepsake. It will be inserted into the Jan. 20 issues of both newspapers.

City gives OK to dentist money

Get those teeth ready; a new dentist is coming to town.
Thanks to a unanimous vote (with an abstention by Dixie Whitaker) by the Custer City Council Jan. 4 to help fund a portion of a program that will help bring the dentist to town, Custer will have a dentist operating in town for the first time in nearly two years, with Dr. Kari Bolen, DDS, an 11-year veteran of dentistry, set to open a practice in Custer and start taking patients sometime this spring.

Hermosa School building project continues apace

Hermosa School, where the landscape is changing rapidly, was the site of the January meeting of the Custer School District Board of Eduction on Monday and, for the first time in a number of months, the new school project edged out COVID as the subject of the most discussion.
Steve Burgess of Dean Kurtz Construction was on hand to update the board on the progress of the project and had earlier led board members on a tour of the construction site where stud walls are beginning to rise above the foundation.

Monument to expand testing

Monument Health will expand the criteria for testing to include more asymptomatic people. In addition, the laboratory will conduct mass testing events to support the S.D. Department of Health’s efforts in testing more of the state’s population.
The availability of testing supplies has improved in recent weeks, said Emily Leech, Monument Health director of laboratory services. Earlier in the COVID-19 pandemic, supplies were scarce, and hospitals had a hard time keeping up with the testing demand.

Citizen of the Year: Sue Anderson

In a year that had so much uncertainty one thing was known for sure: Sue Anderson will be out there helping in way that she can.

That is why she has been named the Hill City Prevailer News Citizen of the Year for 2020.

“We all went into a challenging year that none of us knew or understood how to cope,” said Dale Householder, president of the Hill City Senior Center. “It was quite a learning curve for everybody. And (Anderson) was right up there, helping lead the learning curve and being a leader in that group.”

Ribbon cut at Bull Run house

The first family has been granted the occupancy certificate for the first home in the Bull Run Subdivision.

Kara Dunlop and her family are the first people to move into a house in the subdivision, which became official with a ribbon cutting on Dec. 29.

“Thank you for the opportunity allowing me to move here to Hill City. ...I have a daughter who is in the school here who started in the fall. So she’s excited,” Dunlop said.

Dunlop works for the U.S. Forest Service and learned about the houses in Bull Run through a colleague’s husband at work.

Woman fined for climbing Rushmore

An Indiana woman has been fined for illegally climbing Mount Rushmore National Memorial on Jan. 3.

At approximately 10:15 p.m. on Jan. 3, a woman, identified as Holly Venderley, of Bloomington, Ind., was observed climbing the memorial and was spotted at the base of George Washington.

According to the statement of probable cause, a ranger was watching security cameras when the ranger observed a flashlight moving along the memorial.

Bridge matches approved at special meeting

The Keystone Town Board held a special meeting Dec. 30 to discuss some end of the year fiscal items.

The board passed two resolutions relating to the town’s application for the Bridge Improvement Grant (BIG). Both resolutions are for the Roy Street bridges over Grizzly Bear Creek.

The town agreed to a 20 percent match on the BIG funds for a new double tee bridge. The town’s liability is estimated to be $87,286 of the total $436,430 project.

Bridge two, a box culvert design, would increase the town’s liability to 30 percent of the total project.

The library has purchased another DVD tower, so Shelly has been busy rearranging furniture and DVDs. We are planning a display area that we will use for librarian and patron picks. We will display banned books the week of Sept. 19-25.This will also be an area we can display holiday materials.

Mark Naugle is Custer County Chronicle Citizen of the Year

To say 2020 was a tumultuous year is the height of understatement and that tumult was perhaps no more keenly felt than in education. However, Custer County schools have had a steady hand at the helm throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to the leadership of their superintendent of schools who, at the same time, has overseen the construction of a new school building and numerous other projects.
That’s why the Custer County Chronicle has named Mark Naugle as Citizen of the Year for 2020.
