Railroad museum ushers in changes

A new exhibit at the South Dakota Railroad Museum will usher in a 2020 filled with changes.

The museum, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, will open the Dakota Depot exhibit during the spring.

“It is going to be a 12 foot by 30 foot structure inside the museum,” said Rick Mills, museum curator. “The front facade will look like a train depot that were commonplace in small towns such as Hill City.”

Householder is 2019 Citizen of the Year

Picking one person for the Citizen of the Year honor is a challenging task.

In an area that produces so many people that dive right into working to improve the community, many names come to mind that are deserving.

But one man above them all stood out due to his work to better the community — Dale Householder.

Average winter predicted

It officially became winter on Dec. 21 and will remain winter until March 19. With that in mind, it’s time to look at what the winter will have in store for the Black Hills.

Jon Chamberlain, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Rapid City, explained what the winter will possibly have in store for the Hills.

There is no strong chance for above average or below average temperatures, he said.

Keystone budget supplement sets record

The Town of Keystone 2019 supplemental appropriation is record-setting according to town finance officer Cassandra Ott.

“It’s the smallest it’s been in at least a decade,” Ott said. 

The total is $11,025. Of that, $9,500 will be transferred from the 211 Bed Booze and Board tax savings account while the remaining $1,525 will be moved over from the general fund.

Sherry and Marcel Wahlstrom are 2019 Custer County Chronicle Citizens of the Year

Compared with most Custer business owners, Marcel and Sherry Wahlstrom are relative newcomers. After all, they purchased The Bavarian Inn motel only a little over five years ago. 
However, in that time, they have turned the establishment into a first-class destination resort and have immersed themselves in community life with an attitude of “what’s good for one is good for all.”
That’s why the Custer County Chronicle has named them Citizens of the Year for 2019. 

‘The Best’ coming Jan. 15

On Jan. 15, the Custer County Chronicle and Hill City Prevailer News will put a new spin on the year in review when they publish the third annual “The Best,” which will feature photos and short descriptions of many of the things that happened in Custer County, Hill City and Keystone.
This separate publication will be printed in tabloid size in color, making for a great keepsake. It will be inserted into the Jan. 15 issues of both newspapers.

Wind Cave brought up during debate

Wind Cave National Park got a few minutes of national fame Dec. 18 when Democratic presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar mentioned the cave during a debate.
During the debate, which was held on PBS and co-sponsored by Politico, Klobuchar, a U.S. senator from Minnesota, interrupted an argument between U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Ind.

Lois Bittner: fostering love

Lois Bittner of Hill City has brought reassurance and guidance to 387 children in foster care. She did this by opening the doors of her house for 46 years as a foster parent.

“At that time, I had a baby daughter who died at birth,” Bittner said. “I guess I was looking for something to fill the void and some kind of meaning in my life. I heard about the need at that time for foster parents for infants and I was only going to do it until I could get pregnant again, but I ended up hooked by that time.”

Mount Rushmore construction forces graduation to Hill City

In a Keystone Happenings Facebook page post entitled “Sounding pretty hopeful,” local business owner Tim Johnson posted a link to an article from the Dec. 19 Washington Examiner in which President Donald Trump promises to Gov. Kristi Noem to bring fireworks back to Mount Rushmore.

This created sparks on social media, including from Hill City School Board member Angie Ross.
