For Thursday and Friday of this week only, the Hill City School District will be going virtual for the state volleyball tournament in Watertown, for which Hill City qualified for the first time last week,

Blake Gardner, superintendent of the district, made the announcement in a YouTube video after the game.

Vets program held outdoors

It was a sunny, but brisk and breezy day for Custer School District’s unique outdoor Veterans Day Program last Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Park. Temperatures hovered in the mid-30s and the park’s flags were billowing under a steady breeze as an estimated crowd of 125 people gathered to honor veterans living and dead in the 26th annual event.

City wants to cull male deer

“Reluctantly, yes.”
That was how Custer City Council alderman Todd Pechota cast his vote in approving this year’s culling of the deer herd in Custer, usually a yearly program the city undertakes to manage the population of deer within city limits.
Pechota wasn’t against the program or the number of deer taken; he was against what has become the annual ritual of culling only female deer, which he said is detrimental to herd health.

Healing Garden gets intention, prayer house

The Healing Garden at Monument Hospital  Custer is getting a new addition that is hoped will be a place of meditation and prayer for folks in the community and may possibly aid in the prevention of suicide. A second-hand garden shed is being converted into an intention and prayer house through the efforts of a number of volunteers and contributors in the community and is open to everyone at all times.

One day after Dr. Michael Osterholm, a member of president-elect Joe Biden’s coronavirus task force, suggested in an interview that four to six weeks of a nationwide lockdown could bring the numbers down drastically, Dr. Anthony Fauci said he doesn’t believe the United States will need to go into lockdown to fight the coronavirus if people double down on wearing masks and social distancing, according to a report by the Associated Press.
Fauci said “the cavalry is coming” in the form of vaccines.
“Help is really on the way,” he said.

Town discusses zoning commission

Keystone is moving toward creating a planning and zoning board, according to the most recent town board meeting.

The move would allow the town to adopt the recently completed comprehensive plan created through a partnership with the Black Hills Council.

Black Hills Council representative, Lysann Zeller, explained that the process of adopting a comprehensive plan involves two sets of two public hearings: one with a planning and zoning commission and the second with the town board. However, the Town of Keystone does not currently have a planning and zoning commission.

Mystic Road residents concerned about off-roading

Residents of Mystic Road have noticed an increased amount of dust and traffic on their road caused by the increase in all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and utility vehicle (UTV) traffic.

On Nov. 6, Pennington County Commission member Ron Rossknecht, who represents the residents of Mystic Road, hosted a public meeting at the commission’s chamber in Rapid City.

“What I want to get done here is see what we can get done for Mystic Road,” he said.

Christmas parade set for Nov. 27

The annual Olde Tyme Christmas Parade is on for Nov. 27.

The parade was approved at Monday night’s meeting of the Hill City Common Council.

“There are really no changes other than the date,” said Brett McMacken, city administrator for Hill City. “The only change would be the route.”

The change in the route would take the parade down Main Street and then down Museum Drive before looping back to the South Dakota State Railroad Museum.

County: guns OK on premises

Visitors to the Custer County Courthouse and other county buildings will be able to carry a gun—concealed or otherwise—into the courthouse in the near future, due to a resolution passed at the latest meeting of the Custer County Commission.
The commission, by a 3-1 vote, passed Resolution 2020-18, which allows county employees and the public to possess conceal carry firearms in or on the courthouse and county property. The resolution was later amended to allow carry of any kind, not just concealed carry.

Custer to get free testing

The S.D. Department of Health, in partnership with the S.D. National Guard and Office of Emergency Management and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will provide drive-through COVID-19 testing in 10 South Dakota communities over the next two weeks. Custer is among those selected.
