No byway approval yet by county

Custer County Commission support for the proposed Crazy Horse Scenic Byway will have to wait at least two more weeks, as the commission at its Nov. 20 meeting once again declined to offer its official support for the byway until it is sure county landowners along the byway won’t have property rights taken away.
The issue initially came up at the commission’s Nov. 6 meeting, when approval was sought for the byway proposed by the Oglala Sioux Tribe (OST). It would include parts of Hwy. 40 and 16A in Custer County.

Sewer plant to be signed off

Keystone is ready to sign off on the sewer project, it was revealed at the most recent Keystone Town Board meeting.

Jerry Przybylski, public works superintendent said, “I think we can go ahead and sign that sheet. The only thing we got left on there is we’re calibrating the meters.”

The board voted unanimously to have board president Rick Brandfas sign the letter of completion. 

Christmas tree permits available

It’s that time of year where you can chop down your own tree within the Black Hills National Forest.

Christmas tree tags became available Nov. 12 and will remain available through Dec. 24

Each year, the Black Hills National Forest sells approximately 3,000 Christmas tree permits, said Scott Jacobson, public affairs officer for the Black Hills National Forest.

Hawthorne brings financial services to Hill City

Christy Hawthorne has brought Edward Jones Investments to Hill City and can be found at Old World Plaza.

Hawthorne’s journey begins like many people who have moved to the Black Hills. Hawthorne is originally from California but — along side her husband and later her kids — she has been visiting the Hills since the early 1990s.

Planning and zoning recommends TIF approval

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story was written before Monday's Hill City Common Council meeting where the Council unanimously approved the TIF.

Hill City has taken a step toward attaining affordable housing.

At the Hill City Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Tuesday, Nov. 19, the commission unanimously recommended approval to the Hill City Common Council of a tax increment financing (TIF) zone in the city and approved the boundaries of the TIF.

Flood map open house Dec. 3

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the City of Custer will host a public open house Dec. 3 at the Custer County Courthouse Annex Pine Room at 5 p.m. regarding flood map changes within the county and city limits at the end of next year.
City  and county residents and business owners are encouraged to review changes to their flood risk and secure cost-savings on flood insurance. City officials say it’s important for residents and business owners to understand what these changes mean and how they may benefit from cost savings on their flood insurance.

Airport decision causes turbulance

That was the message delivered by members of the Custer County aviation community to the Custer County Commission at the commission’s Nov. 20 meeting, as those members pleaded with the commission to renew the contract of current airport manager Brenden Hendrickson.

Sheriff's office denies wrongdoing in lawsuit response

The defendants in a lawsuit filed by a Custer County woman over her kidnapping and rape in September 2017 have denied allegations in a civil lawsuit that was federally filed in August.

Collision was ‘nightmarish’

A Custer couple returning home Thursday evening from a trip to Denver came upon a grisly scene on Hwy. 89 near Argyle after a pickup truck collided with and killed a black Angus cow in the early evening hours. 
Frank and Audrey Carroll were headed home at about 6 p.m. and had traveled a few miles north from Minnekahta Junction when they came upon two vehicles stopped in the roadway and what appeared to be several “big bodies” littering the road. 

City floats ideas on wastewater

If the City of Custer’s wastewater treatment plant were a person, it would likely be retired, living in Arizona and staring at the possibility of moving into assisted living in a few years.
The expected “design life” of a typical wastewater treatment plant (before rehab/replacement is needed) is around 20 years (although they will last longer) and, although the city’s plant continues to chug along, it is close to the end of its design life, as it is 32 years old.
