Saturday, Feb. 6
The 911 Misdial of the Day: A child got control of a phone and dialed the emergency line. No emergency was taking place there.
12:59 a.m.: A deputy helped with an emergency medical call on north 4th Street in Custer.
6:38 a.m.: Burglar alarms blared at the Custer school compound. A deputy and a school maintenance man found the alarms to be false.

Fish is new veterans service officer

Custer has been home to Todd Fish for more than 35 years, even as he was world-hopping as a member of the U.S. Army and Reserves. But now he has finally come home to stay and recently took over the job of county veterans service officer.
After growing up in Arlington, Fish enlisted in the Army in 1984 and purchased property here the next year. His parents, David and Jean Fish, left the farm at the same time and have lived here ever since.

­­10 years ago, 2011 — Custer School District was facing up to $1 million in cuts ... Lo-Ru West Dance Studio presented its presentation of “Swash Buckled” with a cast of 48 dancers ranging in age from 4 to 17 ... The county agreed to pay Scull Construction $29,520 after reaching a settlement for time lost on the renovation and expansion of the Custer County Courthouse after contamination was found in the soil in the area where the elevator shaft was being constructed.

Wednesday, Jan. 27
4:47 p.m.: A deputy and the county coroner dealt with a death on Morris Place. Foul play is not suspected at this time.
5:37 p.m.: Cows were reported out of their pasture near Custer Highlands. A possible owner was called to corral them.
7:42 p.m.: Deputies investigated a loud music complaint at a trailer park west of Custer. No loud music was heard.
Thursday, Jan. 28
1:28 a.m.: A deputy checked out an abandoned vehicle parked behind a semi-popular Custer convenience store. The derelict ride may be towed by the management.

The 911 Misdial of the Day: A device dialed the emergency line without the owner’s knowledge somehow.
1:55 a.m.: A deputy moved wind-blown construction cones from the traffic lanes of Custer’s north 5th Street.
12:32 p.m.: Fake sweepstakes scams were reported on Alamo Lane. The reporting person realized that the Publisher’s Clearinghouse organization likely did not require its winners to open bank accounts for them and gave the scammers nothing.

Horkey takes senior center helm

“Exciting” and “exhilarating” are words Roxanne Horkey uses to describe her feelings about being hired as the new director of Custer Senior Center, but she also admits the challenge is a little scary.
“I’d be lying if I said, ‘I’ve got this,’” said Horkey, who officially took over the position Monday. “This is an amazing opportunity, but it’s all going to be a challenge.”

­­10 years ago, 2011 — Frank Schmidt killed a record lion. The cat, a 5-year-old male, weighed 177 pounds and was 88 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Luke Neduna, a resource biologist with the S.D. Department of Game, Fish & Parks, confirmed it was the largest lion taken in South Dakota since hunting seasons began for mountain lions in 2005 ...
