Thanksgiving Day Thursday, Nov. 26
6:38 p.m.: Several calls were received during the evening from a male staying at a west Custer motel, who was convinced unknown people were attempting to break into his vehicle parked outside. At one point, he claimed someone was attempting to steal the windshield from his vehicle (Used windshields from 2003 Pontiac Montana vans must be very desirable to thieves). All the reports were deemed unfounded. Other factors may be at work here.

­­10 years ago, 2010 — Custer Do It Best held its 29th annual customer apprecation open house  ... Custer County register of deeds Dennis Zellner won $5,000 in the S.D. Lottery’s Wild Card 2 drawing ... Custer Masonic Lodge 66, Custer School District and the Custer County Sheriff’s Office sponsored the S.D. Child Identification (CHIP) program to aid in the recovery of missing children.

Wreaths are green project

Customers of the Custer Post Office may have noticed recently that the overgrown red cedar that grew to the left of the main entrance is gone, having been cut down as part of ongoing renovation at the facility. Never fear, however; the tree will continue to live on — for a while, at least — in Christmas decorations being produced by Custer Mile High Garden Club.

­­10 years ago, 2010 — The Custer County Sheriff’s Department was stretched to the limit, with too few deputies trying to do too much work, according to Sheriff Rick Wheeler ... Crazy Horse Memorial had thousands of trees infected with the mountain pine beetle on its 1,000 acres of land ... Bidders spent nearlly $260,000 on buffalo and burros at the Fall Classic Bison Auction, well up over the $173,690 the park received in 2009.

Marty Mahrt story to be told

Ret. Col. Marty Mahrt, an accomplished U.S. Air Force pilot, was shot down and rescued in 1966 during the Vietnam War. Years later, as the war was ending in 1975, the Purple Heart winner from Custer helped evacuate the U.S. Embassy in Saigon.
A grant from the Sioux Falls-based Mary Chilton Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Foundation will help the South Dakota Air and Space Foundation preserve and tell Mahrt’s story.

Mary Richards retires from library

Originally from Brighton, Colo., Mary Richards moved to Custer in June of 1972—the year of the big Rapid City flood. Richards worked various jobs in Custer before beginning her career at the library as a part-time employee Jan. 25, 1996.
She had no previous library experience but was eager to learn and do a great job. Over the past two decades, she has flourished in our community library while serving patrons of all ages and personalities.

Legalization brings worries of increased youth marijuana use

One major concern of South Dakotans who opposed legalization of medical and recreational marijuana was that it could lead to an epidemic of youth use of the drug.
Drug-abuse prevention advocates and law enforcement officials said greater availability of marijuana would almost certainly lead to an increase of use among children and teens whose brains are still developing.
