Girls going to state

The Hill City boys wrestling team’s season is over, with none of the boys advancing from regions to state. 
“Our two eigthth graders came so close to making it to state but didn’t quite make it,” said coach Tanner Davis. “It was a great weekend, though, and they had great matches.”
The boys placed 14th overall, scoring 20 team points at the Class 4B Region Tournament.
Cory Ronish (4-6) placed fifth and scored 14 team points in his 106-pound class, winning  by fall over Taggen Paxton of McLaughlin.

Ranger girls take down Douglas

Despite having a short week, the Hill City High School Ranger girls basketball team made it count. 
The Rangers faced off against the Douglas Patriots for their last home game of the season Feb. 6. Historically, the Rangers have beaten the Patriots by 44 to 24 in 2022 and 47 to 30 in 2023. 
This year was no different. The Rangers won 48 to 23. This left the team standing at 15-3 for the season. 
The Rangers girls had a game against the Custer Wildcats Tuesday, Feb. 13. Results were not available upon publication. 

Ranger boys lose to Douglas

The Hill City High School Ranger boys basketball team had a lighter load this week with just one game on Feb. 8 against the Douglas Patriots. 
Head coach Laramie Harvey said, “We played well in the first half, and then in the second half they went to a zone and the game really slowed down. We weren’t able to come out on top.” 
Devin Buehler scored 24 points, and Alex Stoeckmann scored 13 points. Also, after a break due to an injury, Zane Messick was able to return to the court and scored 13 points. The Rangers lost 79 to 63. 

Ranger girls start a new winning streak

After losing an eight-game winning streak by one point in a game against the Custer Wildcats, the Hill City High School Ranger girls basketball team rallied and claimed two more victories last week.
First, the Rangers had a home game against the Newell Irrigators. Historically, the Rangers have beaten the Irrigators, winning by 54-24 in 2022 and 40-32 in 2023. This time, the Rangers won 52-18. 

Hanson And Faehnrich Take First at Home

Once again Brittney Hanson stood on top of the podium for the Rangers girls wrestling team. The senior quickly took down the two opponents she faced at the Black Hills Classic Tournament held at home in Hill City.
In the semifinals for the 165-pound weight class, Hanson (22-4 won) by fall over Hulett’s (Wyo.) Myah Cornett (8-5) in a mere 57 seconds. In first place action she defeated Eddy Atkins (17-10) from Lead-Deadwood in 22 seconds of mat time.

Ranger boys taken down by Lakota Tech

The Hill City High School Ranger boys basketball team went head to head with the Lakota Tech Tatanka in a game Feb.3. 
“It was kind of a rollercoaster, if you will. We played a decent first quarter, and then we got into some foul trouble which had us try some new things which didn’t pan out really well,” said head coach Laramie Harvey. 

Wildcats scratch Ranger winning streak

The Hill City High School Ranger girls basketball team had another busy week with three games in four days. 
To start, the Rangers traveled to Sturgis Brown High School Jan. 23 for a game against the Scoopers. 
Head coach Anna Eckert said, “We came out pretty well in the first quarter of the Sturgis game. We went quiet in the second and third quarters, and then we were able to get it down to our post and work the ball around in the fourth quarter.” 

Boys lose two, win one

The Hill City High School Ranger boys basketball team took on three games last week with mixed results. 
First, they traveled to Sturgis Brown High School Jan. 23 for a game against the Scoopers. Historically, the Scoopers have beaten the Rangers by 59-42 in 2022 and 52-45 in 2023. This year, the Scoopers went after another win despite standing at 2-5 for the season before the game. 
The Rangers lost the game 62-47. 

Hanson tops podium

Brittney Hanson (18-4) took first place in her 165-pound weight class scoring  26 team points for the Hill City Rangers girls wrestling team at the Belle Fourche Girls Invitational tournament.
Hanson had a bye in the quarterfinals and wrestled Summer Marnette (21-12)  of Rapid City Stevens in the semifinals. Hanson won by fall at 1:42.
In the first-place match Hanson faced Eddy Atkins (16-9) of Lead-Deadwood. Hanson took her down at 2:57. 

Ranger girls claim six game winning streak

With three games last week, the Hill City High School Ranger girls basketball team refused to break their winning streak. They now stand at 10-2 for the season. 
To start, the Rangers played a home game against the Belle Fourche Broncs Jan. 16. Historically, the Broncs have beaten the Rangers by 58-50 in 2022 and 49-26 in 2023. This year, the Rangers turned the tables and won 49-42.
Maggie Taylor had 19 points and 16 rebounds, Lillie Ross had 11 points and Alaina Dean had eight points and five assists.
