The Hill City Rangers volleyball team had a busy and successful week, with three matches in just five days and coming away with three straight victories.

Rangers show mercy for Faith Friday night

Friday night was again kind to the Hill City Rangers who are now 5-0 on the season after a resounding 60-6 win against the Faith Longhorns.
Zane Messick got the Ranger’s initial first down of the Sept. 19 game after a throw from quarterback Brensen Veneklasen. 
Veneklasen kept the ball himself for a few plays, but  it would be Caleb Sobolik who would be the first to score for Hill City with 10:47 left in the first quarter.

Cross Country races toward the end of the season

The Hill City High School cross country team is racing toward the end of its season, and the training strategy is getting more individualized and focused on the bigger picture: making it to state.
Head coach Joe Noyes explained the Rangers’ training cycle. 

Rangers rally for a volleyball win on the road

The Rangers Volleyball team is back to a .500 record after a big win on the road against the Douglas High School Patriots Tuesday. 
The Rangers came out strong, scoring 15 of the first 16 points of the first set and finishing 25-6. 
Hill City kept the momentum through the rest of the game, sweeping the Patriots with a 25-16 score in the next two sets. 
The team’s strong serving, improved coverage and increased confidence in the new rotation were key factors for bringing home the win. 

Ranger defense holds Ranchers down

It’s a great day to be a Hill City Rangers football fan as the team is now 4-0 on the season after taking down the Harding County Ranchers Sept. 12.
The game began with a Hill City penalty, one of many against the Rangers who continue to make big plays and have big wins in spite of the mistakes.

Cross country team travels to Sioux Falls

The Hill City High School cross country varsity team traveled to Sioux Falls last Saturday to take on a host of South Dakota’s top runners as well as teams from Minnesota and Nebraska at the Heartland Preview cross country meet at Yankton Trail Park.
Conditions were good for the rolling hill course, allowing fast times for runners despite the warm temperatures.

Rangers tame the tigers

The Hill City Rangers football team is undefeated three games into its 2025-26 season. Hill City (3-0) roared past the Dupree Tigers (1-2) at home  Sept. 5, with a resounding 51-0 win.
The penalties began early in the game with a false start against Dupree on the opening kickoff where senior Caleb Sobolik took the ball to midfield. 

Rangers run with competitive attitude

The Ranger cross country team competed Friday at the Northern Hills Invitational Cross Country Meet in Spearfish. According to head coach Joe Noyes, the team raced “the most competitive and locked in we have looked at this point in a season.”

Spearfish sweeps Rangers in first conference game

The Rangers Volleyball team went head-to-head against the Spearfish Spartans on the road last Tuesday and suffered their first Black Hills Conference loss in a three-set sweep. 
The Spartans controlled the match from start to finish, making some critical first-set plays to take the lead 25-20.
Spearfish maintained control of the game despite a close and competitive exchange in the second set with Spearfish narrowly edging out the Rangers 25-23.

Rangers run for it at Douglas

The Hill City Rangers cross country team kicked off its season at the Douglas Early Bird Invitational last Saturday held at Prairie Ridge Golf Course.
On the girls varsity side, senior Andee Frandsen led the Rangers with a 16th place finish in 21:11.75, followed closely by junior Aspen Veneklasen finishing 22nd (21:38.21), Jaelyn Peters at 25th (21:50.74) and sophomore Phoebe Bentley-Buschur in 37th (23:08.55).
