A year of firsts and memories

Oct. 17 marked not just an anniversary but a milestone in my life. It’s the day I got to call these Hills my home after years of dreaming and months of planning and packing. From an outward perspective, the day shouldn’t have felt that homey. I was sick.
 
We arrived late, ate dinner and slept between blankets on the floor. 
 

Treading lightly on the van lifers

As I sat at the Hill City Common Council meeting last week and heard the concerns of one business owner I found myself thinking about my own personal experiences. The topic as I saw it dealt with homelessness. This business owner was concerned about a sketchy individual sleeping in his vehicle  at the parking lot of the business establishment.
 
And I admit I’ve likely been that sketchy individual. 
 
Now before you judge, let me explain.

A I've always wanted to see Crazy Horse Memorial up close. Of course, I've been to the museum many times. I've peered through the scopes and zoomed in with my camera, but neither could capture the detail I wanted. Until moving to Custer, I didn't know that there actually were opportunities to hike to the top.

Dear Editor,
In looking at the South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws (SDBML) website, I wanted to understand what this group sees as positive in legalizing marijuana in South Dakota by passing Initiated Measure 27. They primarily state why it will not cause increased use by minors, will not negatively affect crime and will not cause an uptick of traffic accidents. The “facts” they present are intended to negate different statistics given by opponents. One positive given on the SDBML website was – more money for the state. Bingo! Follow the money.
 

What I learned from a man named Vern

About two weeks ago my friend Cathe texted me an obituary she had read. 
 
“This may be the most inspiring obituary I’ve ever read,” she wrote in her text as she explained her envy of the deceased individual.
 
I replied that anybody can write their own obituary and left it at that. 
 
This past weekend I inadvertently ended up at a memorial of sorts for a man named Vern. I never met Vern and did not know anything about him until the memorial day.

Greetings! How was everyone’s summer? The temps finally feel like fall, along with the colorful foliage. How beautiful are the Black Hills, especially in the fall! We are very fortunate to live in this part of the country!  

First signs of fall

I have never loved fall as much as I do this year. With every sign of the season, I get a little more excited. However, I find it interesting that we each have our own signs. 
 
A friend told me it was fall because she started school and sports. According to my weather app, it was still in the 80s and would remain there for some time. Nevertheless, it was her sign. 
 

Making a big stink about the poop

The other day I was riding down the Mickelson Trail when I saw a pile of horse poop. And then another and then another. I was outraged. 
 
Who’s in charge of cleaning up the horse poop on the Mickelson trail?
 
How come I have to pick up Sadie’s dog poop but horse riders don’t have to pick up their own poop? 
 
Where is the fairness in this system?
 
That was my initial response. 
 

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,
Governmental overreach. It’s a term that has become commonplace in many areas of life as we have allowed the federal government to creep into every facet of our existence without demanding accountability from those who seek to govern us.  This concept of action based on ideology disguised as protection isn’t new, but I will admit I was surprised when this found its way into the National Park Service. 
 

My adventures on a farm

Growing up south of the Twin Cities, I didn’t have many opportunities to interact with farm animals. My grandparents have a farm, but the animals were long gone by the time I was born. 
 
Two of my friends had hobby farms but as a result they lived an hour or more away. Thus, one of the only times I got to interact with animals was at the county fair petting zoos.
