Learn more about water, sewer rate increases Dec. 5

Monthly water and wastewater rates are expected to increase with the  projects on the horizon in Hill City.
Recently the Hill City Common Council had a water and wastewater rate study completed by Miranda Kleven with city engineer AE2S. During the Nov. 12 meeting, Kleven, along with Joe Nobel of AE2S, presented the rate study and their recommendations to the council. 

Parents dish about food in district

A parent engagement meeting between Lunchtime Solutions Inc and Hill City School District parents was held Nov. 12. 
Lunchtime Solutions Inc. (LSI)  is the food service provider for the school district. The meeting was scheduled after numerous posts on Facebook, although Erica Layton, Food Service Director for LSI  said she has received only two complaints since November 2023, both about the lactose-free milk being offered.

The 2025-26 Hill City School District  school calendar was approved by the  Hill City School District Board of Education at its Nov. 11 meeting.

Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan ready for public review

The Pennington County (PC) Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan (NHMP) is now open for public review until Dec. 3. 
NHMPs are guided by the Code of Federal Regulations and must be updated every five years. This plan was last updated in 2018. In PC, a multi-jurisdictional plan is created. That way instead of having smaller communities create individual plans with the same requirements, all of the municipalities can be included in one plan. 

Celebrate Victorian Christmas in Keystone

Purses, soaps, scarves, jewelry, personalized items and homemade food are just some of the items people can purchase at this year’s Victorian Christmas. The event has been taken over by Holy Terror Days, Inc., a for-profit company run by some of the same people behind Holy Terror Days, the nonprofit that began the tradition years ago.
The day, which is filled with vendors, a community meal and bingo, is a way to buy local items and support the community of Keystone.

County moves jail forward in another 3-2 vote

In another 3-2 vote the Pennington County Commission voted to move forward with the jail expansion project. The move came at the Nov. 6 regular meeting which was held after a special meeting to discuss the  jail project.
Commissioner Deb Hadcock raised concerns over the proposed jail addition project at the special meeting held prior to the regular meeting.
Hadcock said she was in support of the jail project but raised various issues including the location of the project and its cost.

Ladner, Goodwin, Hulse pull ahead

It appears District 30 will have Republican representation across the board when the South Dakota Legislature convenes in January, as all three Republican candidates were winning their races as of press time in yesterday’s General Election.
In the race for two seats in the state House of Representatives, Republican incumbent Trish Ladner was leading with 41 percent of the vote, while fellow Republican Tim Goodwin was also around 41 percent. Democrat challenger Susan Scheirbeck was trailing at 18 percent of the vote.

Update on Tracy Park

The Hill City Common Council set a record with one of the shortest meetings of the year Oct. 28. 
As the council liaison for the planning & zoning commission (PZC), alderwoman Lori Miner shared an update about the recent concerns expressed by a neighborhood group from South Newton regarding bicycle traffic issues at Tracy Park.

Prairie Berry Winery, Miner Brewing to close at year’s end

After 25 years in business and over a thousand awards, it was announced Oct. 24 that Prairie Berry Winery will be closing at the end of 2024. 
“We are grateful to have shared the last 25 years with our customers and guests. We had a vision of creating a world-class winery and brewery experience in the Black Hills of South Dakota and our customers and staff made that a reality. We will treasure those memories as we close Prairie Berry Winery, Miner Brewing and Addie Camp General Store,” read the farewell Facebook post.
