BBB rewrite passes first reading

The Keystone Chamber of Commerce may sit down with the  Pennington County Sheriff’s Office concerning the findings of the agreed upon procedures (AUP) conducted by Casey Peterson.

A discussion as to whose responsibility it is to notify law enforcement took place at the most recent Keystone Town Board meeting.

Early winter storm hits Hills

An early-season winter storm dropped a foot of snow on Hill City, according to the National Weather Service.

On Sunday, a winter storm brought snow to the Black Hills, which was heavy in areas, according to the weather service, with a mixture of rain and snow in the foothills area.

Travel became difficult in portions of the northern Black Hills. The storm also produced strong winds, with gusts of 60 to 70 miles per hour in areas, the weather service said.

Senior center gets new director

The Hill City Senior Center has a new director— Mary Walton.

Walton took over as director at the beginning of the month, and since then has been thoroughly impressed by Hill City and the members of the senior center.

Board discusses adding teacher

The need for a second special education teacher in the district was discussed at the most recent Hill City School Board meeting.

Although the board could not conduct any action on this matter, the increasing number of students receiving special services has prompted the board to effectively green light the hiring of an additional teacher, tapping a December college graduate from the area.

Sidewalk work ‘a week behind’ after poor weather

After poor weather the previous two weeks crews working on the Hill City sidewalks are hoping for sunny days ahead.

At the weekly sidewalk meeting though, crews were optimistic that more work can be done this week because of a good weather forecast.

“Hopefully the weather is good,” said Brett McMacken, city administrator for Hill City. “It looks good.”

Keystone economic committee looking at housing

The Keystone Economic Development Assoc. is trying to tackle housing issues in Keystone.

“For the housing initiative the best way that it works is that we get one or two plots resold and then they can set up a house and set up as a show,” said Danielle Leyden, president of the association. “So they have something to show people.”

One option the committee is looking at are Governor’s Homes.

Areas for growth targeted in Keystone comprehensive plan survey

Almost a third of Keystone’s population responded to the Keystone Comprehensive Plan Survey, according to the most recent meeting of the planning committee.

Ninety-seven people replied to the survey with nearly 40 percent of respondents identifying themselves as “living in Keystone year round.”

STEM lab gives students hands-on training

During the most recent Hill City School District Board of Education meeting, board members and attending citizens got to see first-hand what the Hill City School District science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) classes are doing in the classroom.

Sign ordinance sent to attorney

The Hill City Planning and Zoning Commission took the next step to updating its electronic sign policy.

At its regular meeting held on Monday, the commissioners present unanimously voted 4-0 to send the revisions to city attorney Frank Bettmann for his comments. Commissioner Rollie Noem was not present at the meeting.

Sidewalk project braces for snow

With snow and colder temperatures in the forecast, work is being done quickly on the Hill City sidewalks to prepare, although crews are predicting lost days due to weather.

At their weekly sidewalk meeting held Monday, however, both the crews working on the sidewalk and city officials expressed their pleasure with how the project is going.

“Everyone seems pleased,” said Brett McMacken, city administrator for Hill City. “We haven’t heard any negative feedback.”
