Betty Peplinski

Betty Peplinski was born March 26, 1933, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., to Leonard and Jeanette (Loonstra) Romanski. She married Robert H. Peplinski Aug. 29, 1959. Together they raised a son and a daughter, Bob and Beth.
The family moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1982, where Betty worked for the South Dakota Department of Tourism. An avid crafter, she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cross-stitch and more. Betty loved all animals, especially her girls and “deer” friends.
Betty passed away in her home at Lone Elk Ranch in Pringle, S.D., April 5, 2024. She was 91.

Donna Reese

Donna Jean Reese was born Feb. 17, 1933, in Pringle, S.D., to George W. Barnes and Catherine (Rice) Barnes.  
Jean went to school in Pringle and Custer, S.D., and played the clarinet in the Custer school band.

John Dyvig

John “Jack” Dyvig leaves a legacy of strength, love and faith.
Jack, of Sioux Falls, S.D., passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Touchmark at all Saints in Sioux Falls. He was 89.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Martha Dyvig; beloved wives, Charlotte and Cheryl; son, Leigh Dyvig; stepdaughter, Kirsten John; granddaughter, Marci Eng; and one great granddaughter.

Paul Schmitz

Paul Francis Schmitz was born Dec. 28, 1940, in Kenmare, N.D., to Leo and Evelyn (Ackerman) Schmitz.  
Paul passed away Feb. 8, 2024, at his home in Custer. He was 83.
A Celebration of Paul’s life will be held at 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., Saturday, April 20, at the VFW in Custer.

Marilyn Fox

Marilyn “Penny” (Fox) Wood, 76, of Custer, S.D., passed away peacefully in her sleep with family by her side March 21 after a brief battle with cancer.
Penny is survived by her daughters KathyJo Hanson of (Tim) Edgemont, S.D., and Margine Humrich (Greg) of Arvada, Colo.; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a sister Nan (Fox) White (Richard) Commerce City, Colo.
Penny is preceded in death by her son, Sean Wood; and parents, Whitie and Betty Kennah.
Penny’s wishes were to have her body donated to the University of South Dakota.

Byron Marteny

Byron Ira Marteny was born July 23, 1935, in Nebraska to Odin and Ruth (Robinson) Marteny. He married Janice in 1962 and they raised seven children.
Byron, of Custer, S.D., passed away April 3, 2024. He was 88.
He was preceeded in death by his parents; his granddaughter, Casey Parker; and siblings, Lee, Peggy, Gladys, Albert, Roger, Jerry, Charlie and John.

Nicholas Holcombe

Nicholas Lee Holcombe was the third child welcomed by his parents, Cathy and Steve Holcombe of Columbus, Neb. He was happily greeted by his big sister and brother, and just two years later this little group became a gang of four when another little brother was born. They were “one for all and all for one,” creating a bond of enduring love, still in place today.
Nicholas was an honor student at Western Dakota Tech in Rapid City, S.D., and graduated, earning his associate of applied science degree.

Maynard Downen

Maynard Downen, 95, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2024, in Rapid City, S.D. Celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 2024 at the Fairburn Civic Center.
Kirk Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Sheryl Spooner

Sheryl Lyn Spooner, 42, of Jefferson, Wisc., passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024 as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Sheryl was born on August 17, 1981, in Custer County, South Dakota. She attended school and graduated Custer High School, class of ‘99.  Sheryl was very athletic and involved in several sports including wrestling, volleyball, basketball, softball and most recently she joined the Jefferson Rowing Team.  She made any athletic activity look easy, and earned many awards and medals. She loved coaching youth teams.

Kalomera Stabnow

On Feb. 10, 2024, Kalomera M. Stabnow exited this life and journeyed to a city with foundations whose Builder and Maker is God. She retained salvation through Jesus Christ late in life and strove to grow in grace and sanctification through prayer and scripture study. She attended church at Break Free Agape Fellowship under the guidance of Pastor Russell. When visiting with friends and family she would often “earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” according to the scriptures (Jude 1:3).
