Custer Highlands welcomes new saloon

Published by admin on Thu, 08/18/2022 - 9:48am

That newly constructed yurt and open sign visible driving back from Newcastle, Wyo., is Elk Mountain Saloon and Social Club. Owner and operator of the business is Susan Anderson.
The building itself is a round structure with mesh canvas walls and there’s a bar top inside. Outside the yurt there are tables filled with inviting guests enjoying a beer or two.
“It’s not a bar, it’s a gathering place,” Anderson said.

The Custer Deli opened Aug. 5 and with 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday (open Sundays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), Custer now has more options for breakfast, lunch and dinner downtown.
Located at 437 Mt. Rushmore Road, between Southern Hills Law and the Rock Shop, The Custer Deli offers full cases of meat and cheese, cold salads and hot entrees.
Wanting to strengthen Custer’s restaurant/food choices, creative force Gabi Braia handles the majority of the deli’s cooking, providing “healthy, comfort food,” she said.

Music carries ‘Something Rotten’

Driving through Custer State Park to the Playhouse Aug. 10, I was behind a few other vehicles also on their way to see the opening matinee of “Something Rotten.” It was not a sold-out show and they were still welcoming walk-ins. The Playhouse’s snack shack was especially a respite as I’d skipped lunch and thankfully the snacks are allowed inside the newly air conditioned theater.

Fishing, swimming and canoeing are just a few of the reasons people visit Horsethief Lake.
Although hardly hidden, it has some hidden features many pass by as they pass the lake on Hwy. 244.
Numerous hiking trails allow visitors to encircle the lake or explore even farther through a network that can take one to the highest point  or the longest pedestrian trail in the state.  There are numerous short trails that give lake access, including ramps that make the lake attainable for nearly everyone.

School supply carnival held at Boys & Girls Club

Published by admin on Thu, 08/18/2022 - 9:12am

The Hill City Boys & Girls Club celebrated its 20th anniversary with a carnival to provide members with school supplies for the upcoming year.
The club was originally a local youth center. However, in 2002 the center board under the leadership of former mayor Dave Gray enabled the youth center to become an affiliate of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Black Hills.
Gray’s daughter Megan said, “I just thought he was doing town business. I didn’t know he was working on a place for all the kids.”
