Custer girls are conference champs

The Custer varsity girls cross county runners are setting their sights on the Region 5A title this week after being crowned Black Hills Conference champions at the conference meet at Deadwood last Thursday.
The girls took first place in a field of 10 teams with a team score of 28. Hill City was second with 52 points. Meanwhile the varsity boys placed second behind Sturgis with a team score of 36 compared with 29 for the Scoopers.

Golfers close out season at state meet

The Custer High School golf team put a bow on its season Oct. 4-5 at the South Dakota Class A State Golf Meet, trying to navigate a difficult Madison Country Club Course. After qualifying for the state meet as a team a week earlier at the region meet, the Wildcats had a more difficult time at the state meet.
“The course just ate us up,” said head coach Paul Kelley.
Kelley said the ’Cats don’t play many courses in the Black Hills that are similar to Madison, which he described as “very tight” and one that doesn’t allow for driver use on a lot of holes.

Volleyball season record now 8-13

Coming off its recent second place finish at the Lakota Nation Invitational in Rapid City, the Custer girls volleyball team dropped two games and won one last week. However, even in the losses the Wildcats made their opponents work harder for their wins.
On Tuesday the team traveled south to face perennial rival Hot Springs. The Wildcats got off to a good start, beating the Bison 25-22, but then lost the next three sets 25-22, 25-12 and 25-19.

Wildcat football team falls to Lead-Deadwood

For the past few games, the Custer High School football team had gotten off to a strong start, only to fade as the game wore on. Last Friday night in Deadwood, the opposite was true.
Custer’s first two possessions resulted in fumbles, both of which were scooped up by Golddigger defenders for a touchdown. The result was a 13-0 deficit only four minutes into the game the Wildcats were never able to overcome in a 26-6 loss.

Cheer team places last but improves scores

Plagued by injuries and illness and only able to put six athletes on the mat at its home meet on Saturday, the Custer competitive cheer team continues to move forward with a positive team-building attitude.
The cheerleaders placed last among the five teams in the cheer portion of the cheer and dance invite after having to drastically change its routine at the last minute.
“Even being able to make it onto the mat was a win,” said coach Sheri Deatherage, “because we lost one of the main bases and one of our fliers on very short notice.”

Volleyball team places second at Lakota Nation

The Custer High School girls volleyball team is finally flying high this season after taking second place in the Lakota Nations Invitational (LNI) last Friday and Saturday. The eight victories at the annual Rapid City 16-team tourney came on top of a four-set win over Lead-Deadwood last Thursday and ended an eight-match losing streak that began right after the Custer Invitational at the end of August.
The opening day of LNI on Friday was a long but glorious one for the Wildcats as they cruised to five consecutive victories in pool play.

Custer XC second, third at Sturgis Invite

As the high school cross country season heads into its post season this week, the Custer Wildcats are well-positioned after the varsity girls took second place and the boys finished third at the Sturgis Invite on Thursday.
In the girls race at Sturgis, the Custer team placed three runners in the top five and four in the top 15 to come within 10 team points of edging out Wyoming 4A school Natrona of Casper.
Senior Kadense Dooley finished a mere two seconds behind Natrona’s Hallie Wilhelm to take second place with her time of 19:25.37.

Wildcats shut out in Southern Hills Showdown

A familiar script played out at Wildcat Field last Friday evening, as the Custer High School football team had a strong first quarter before faltering in a 34-0 loss to the Hot Springs Bison in the annual Southern Hills Showdown.
The Bison reclaimed the showdown trophy after it spent the last two years in Custer, and the Wildcats were shutout for the second consecutive week.
The Wildcats took the opening drive and were effective marching down the field, making it down to the Bison eight yard-line before the drive stalled.

Team 'shaking its cheer up'

“We’re definitely hitting some snags, but we’re still having fun and still building the program!”
That’s the assessment of Custer competitive cheer coach Sheri Deatherage following the team’s withdrawal from the Rapid City Stevens meet last Saturday and its preparation to host a meet in Custer this Saturday. 
“We’ve had some setbacks because we’ve had some students who are out for various reasons,” said Deatherage. 

Custer falls to Spearfish

A road trip to Spearfish last Thursday ended in disappointment for the Custer girls volleyball team when the Spartans rolled to a 3-0 victory over the Wildcats. 
“We worked on a new formation and sets one and two looked pretty good,” said head coach Jill Hohn, “but set three is where we struggled again.”
The Wildcats never got more than 18 points in the 18-25, 15-25, 16-25 loss to the Spartans.
