Wildcat golfers win home meet

It was a strong week of golf for the Custer High School golf team last week, as it won its own home golf meet last Friday at Rocky Knolls Golf Course while taking a second place at a meet the previous day.
The Wildcats continued a trend of taking turns being the best golfer at a meet at the Custer meet when freshman Ryder Bailey was the top scorer for Custer, shooting a round of 82, which was good for a second-place finish at the meet.

Harriers first, second at Belle

With some of their toughest competition out of the way and a cooler day to run from the previous week, the Custer cross country varsity teams placed first and second in races at the Belle Fourche Invitational on Thursday. 
Junior Kadense Dooley won the girls 5K race at the hilly Belle Fourche Country Club to lead her team to a first place finish over Spearfish, Sturgis, Belle Fourche and St. Thomas More. Cross country powerhouses Hill City and Rapid City Stevens were not in attendance at the meet. 

Poor first half costs ’Cats in Lennox

It was a tale of two halves last Friday evening for the Custer High School football team in Lennox, as the Wildcats fell behind 21-0 at halftime before roaring back with a chance to tie the game in the second half in a 35-20 loss to the Orioles.
The ’Cats got a taste of how things would go for the first half of their first drive when Daniel Sedlacek broke a long touchdown run, only to have it called back for an illegal block in the back that head coach David Williams said didn’t happen.

Music glitch costly for cheer team

The Custer competitive cheer team scored 91.5 points for a fifth place finish in the Rapid City Central Cheer and Dance Invitational on Monday.
Wildcats head coach Cece Lubben said the team did not have any safety deductions but did have some technical issues that impacted the girls’ performance. 
“The music got messed up in the beginning of the routine and it messed up the girls,” said Lubben. “We’ve had better runs but I’m still very proud of the girls.”

Wildcat volleyball brings down Bison

The Custer girls volleyball team put another game in the win column Thursday night in Hot Springs to bring its season record to five wins and four losses. 
The Wildcats put the Bison away in straight sets of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-19 while leading most of the way. 
“Hot Springs definitely played much harder on their home court, as we expected they would,” said co-head coach Jill Hohn, “so it wasn’t an easy win for like it was at our tournament. 

’Cats rebound, crush Spartans

Prior to last Friday evening’s home opener against the visiting Spearfish Spartans, Wildcat senior Daniel Sedlacek gave a rose to his parents as part of a COVID-19-forced early senior night.
He spent the rest of the night being a thorn in the side of the Spartans.
Sedlacek ran for 316 yards and five touchdowns as the Wildcats bounced back from a shaky first game of the season to run over, around and through the Spartans on the way to a 40-0 victory at Wildcat Stadium last Friday evening.

Merrill paces golf team in Hot Springs

The Custer High School golf team was back at Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs for the Pre-Region Meet Sept. 1.
Matthew Merrill had the best round of his high school career at the meet, finishing in fifth place with a score of 86. Gunner Prior also finished in the top 10, placing seventh with a score of 89. Dustyn Fish made it three Wildcats in the top 10 with a score of 90.
Other Wildcats to compete for Custer included  Ryder Bailey, who finished at 87, and Ethan Lappe, who finished at 128.

Cheer team fourth in season opener

The Custer competitive cheer team started its season with a fourth place showing at a meet in Belle Fourche last Thursday, finishing behind the much larger Rapid City Central and Stevens teams and Sturgis. The Wildcats had no safety deductions and scored 99.5 points. 
“I thought it went really well,” said coach Cece Lubben. “They hit everything I wanted them to hit and they looked like they were having fun. It went exactly how I wanted it to go.”
“The girls had a lot of fun and they were really proud of themselves,” said Lubben. 

‘What we’ve been waiting for’

“Just what we’ve been waiting for, for such a long time!”
That’s how co-head coach Jill Hohn talked about the way the Custer girls volleyball team played in a road game against Belle Fourche last week. 
“Thursday night was probably the best I’d ever seen the girls play,” said Hohn. “Everything came together. Everything flowed so nicely it was just fun to watch.”
The 3-0 victory over the Broncs brought the Wildcats season record to 4 and 3 with all three losses being to major rival Hill City in regular and tournament play. 

Lubben to coach competitive cheer

The Custer competitive cheer team starts its season on Thursday with a trip to Belle Fourche and new head coach Cecelia “Cece” Lubben is optimistic about her team’s first outing. 
“We have everything down right now so I have high hopes for the first competition,” said Lubben.
