Knudson inducted into SDCCTFCA hall

Former Custer High School educator, cross country coach and track and field coach Eldon Knudon was recently inducted into the  S.D. Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association (SDCCTFCA) Hall of Fame.
Knudson is the “father” of the Custer High School cross country program, having started the program in the 1970s. He was also a longtime track and field head coach, as well as a football and basketball coach at different times in his career.

Wildcats one win away from state tournament

Behind three players in double figures, swarming defense, big shots from role players and just enough clutch free throws, the Custer High School boys basketball team got within a game of the Class A State Basketball Tournament next week by virtue of a 64-57 win over the Belle Fourche Broncs last Friday evening in the second round of Region 8A play.

Logan Graf is state champ at 106 pounds

Coming back from a serious hand injury right after Christmas, Logan Graf ended the season at the very top of his weight class. Graf was crowned state champion at 106 pounds at the state B wrestling tournament in Sioux Falls on Saturday. 
The sophomore’s only loss of the season came at a match in Fargo, N.D., when he missed a landing on his right hand and broke the large bone in the middle. The break required surgery in January, and the recovery period kept him off the mat until the regional tournament in Hill City in late February. 

Boys to take on Belle in region play

Seventeen wins.
That’s the goal of the Custer High School boys basketball team as it enters postseason play, which began last night in Region 8A first round action against Hot Springs in a game that ended after press time.
It’s not just a random number, that seventeen. The Wildcats, 14-6 entering last night’s game against the Hot Springs Bison, would find themselves in the Class A State Basketball Tournament should they get to 17 wins. Then, they could go for three more.

’Cats’ season ends in Belle Fourche

For one half of basketball, the Custer High School girls gave the Belle Fourche Broncs all they wanted in the first round of Region 8A play Monday night in Belle Fourche.
The second half, however, proved to be more of what has plagued the Wildcats all season long, as turnovers and an inability to score led to a 31-18 Bronc advantage in the second half, and ultimately, a 48-33 Bronc win that put an end to Custer’s season.

Nine Wildcat wrestlers qualify for state meet

Nine Custer wrestlers—dubbed “The Fine Nine” by their fans—are bound for the state B wrestling tournament in Sioux Falls this weekend after placing in the Region 4B Tournament in Hill City last weekend. 

Wildcat girls lose two games, head to regions

It was another tough week for the Custer High School girls basketball team, as the recurring theme of poor shooting on a struggling offense played out again in a pair of losses, including a 41-30 setback to Lead-Deadwood last Thursday in Lead.
The Wildcats connected on only 23 percent of their shot attempts, which included a 0-14 night from three-point range. The Golddiggers didn’t exactly light the world on fire either, making only 30 percent of their shot attempts.

Black Hills Conference, meet Gage Tennyson. Gage Tennyson, meet the Black Hills Conference.
Pressed into action due to starting center Brody Martinez’s battle with the flu, Tennyson, a Custer High School boys basketball team sophomore post, had himself quite a coming out party last week in a pair of conference games, averaging 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in a pair of Wildcat wins, including 15 points against Lead-Deadwood last Thursday.

Girls fall to Spartans, Broncs

A pair of Northern Hills basketball teams were unkind to the Custer High School girls basketball team last Thursday and Friday, as the Wildcats lost to the visiting Spearfish Spartans  51-41 Feb. 13 at the Armory before losing to the Belle Fourche Broncs 57-26 the following evening in Belle Fourche.
In Belle Fourche the Wildcats got off to a hot start, taking a 16-12 lead after the first quarter. Head coach Mick Patzlaff said the strong start was a product of moving the ball well on offense, which produced good scoring opportunities.

Wildcats come up big against Broncs

It was one Custer High School boys basketball coach Paul Kelley said the team had to have. It was one the team went and got.
Last Friday evening in Belle Fourche the Wildcats scored their biggest win of the season, defeating Belle Fourche 43-34 and likely locking up a pair of home Region 8A playoff games in the process.
“It was good to see the kids bounce back (from the previous evening’s loss to Spearfish),”  Kelley said. “They knew what it meant. They knew this game was important and gave it what they could.”
