Rita Louise Anfinson was born May 29, 1946, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Rita E. (Thompson) Willis and Joe H. Willis.
Professionally, Rita made a career of caring for others working as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Sioux Valley Hospital, the Hot Springs (S.D.) VA Medical Center and Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home.
Rita was united in marriage to Roland Anfinson Jan. 1, 2001, in Sioux Falls, S.F., after a 20-year courtship.

Richard Serino

Richard G. Serino was born in New York City June 1, 1934.
He was the son of Jerry and Elsie Serino. He attended Iona schools in New Rochelle, N.Y., playing baseball and graduating from high school in 1951. He went on to Syracuse University earning a degree in forestry in 1955.
Following college, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier WASP with cold war tours in the Mediterranean and South Atlantic.
Joining the U.S. Forest Service, he was assigned to Custer where he met and married Janet Gates, daughter of Hobart and Ann Gates, in August 1960.

Betty Aldinger

Betty Lou Aldinger was born Jan. 29, 1944, in Roscoe, S.D., to Alma (Braunmeier) and Gus Aldinger.
Betty moved to Custer, S.D., when she was a small child and lived her life in Custer until moving to Rapid City, S.D., in February 2022.

Connie Vasquez-Florez

Constance Charolette (Martin) (Micheli) Vasquez-Florez was born in Garden City, Kansas, April 7, 1946, the oldest of six children.
Connie drove a school bus in Pueblo, Colo., for many years, sold real estate and went back to school to become a nurse, an LPN. She was the supervisor of a home healthcare company, where she taught several of her daughters how to be caregivers to the elderly, disabled, veterans and forgotten folks of Pueblo county, a job with many blessings and rewards. She also managed to find time to volunteer and teach.

Cassandra Bradbury

Cassandra Bradbury, 50, of Custer, S.D. passed away Aug. 25, 2022.
Celebration of life visitation will be held 7-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at Chamberlain McColleys funeral home in Custer.
Arrangements are placed under the local direction of Chamberlain McColleys Funeral Home in Custer.  

 

Sandra Davies

Sandra Davies, mostly known as Gail, was born in 1940 in Campbellton, New Brunswick, Canada. She was raised in Bellevue, Ontario, Canada.  
Following high school, she enrolled in nursing school and became a registered nurse. She was a practicing nurse in Canada and after marrying her husband, a U.S. Navy sailor, in many U.S. cities until retiring in Newport, R.I,  in 2000.
In 2013 she moved to Custer where she made many friends with Wittrock Road residents and as a member of Custer Zonta Club, Custer Republican Women’s Club and the Do-Nothing Club.

Virginia Tubbs

Virginia Rose (Parks) Tubbs was born April 24, 1924, at Dewey, S.D., to James and Roseanna (Sieger) Parks. She moved to various places with her family until she was 5 years old, then to Hot Springs, S.D.
She attended Hot Springs schools and graduated as valedictorian in 1942. After graduation she went to work at the Black Hills Ordnance Depot (Igloo, S.D.). She worked as a typist, then later became the colonel’s secretary. She worked also as a teacher’s aide in the Edgemont Elementary School for several years as well as in the office at the high school.

Marjorie O’Brien

Marjorie  Jean O’Brien was born June 25, 1945, in Sisseton, S.D., to Richard and Helen (Barnhardt) O’Brien.
Marjorie, of Hot Springs, S.D., passed away Aug. 19, 2022, at Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, S.D. She was 77.
Marjorie is survived by her son, Shaun (Amanda) Hylle of Hot Springs; daughters, Colleen Hylle of Dublin, Ga., and Katie (Juan) Morales of Lakeland, Fla.; brother, Patrick (Eileen) O’Brien of Hot Springs; sister, Colleen Harrington of Katy, Texas, seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Steven Hammer

Steven Leroy Hammer was born Nov. 5, 1957, in Hot Springs, S.D., to Marvin and Donna (Larson) Hammer.  He was the oldest of four siblings including Deb, Robert and Jeannette.  
Steve grew up in Custer, S.D., and graduated from Custer High School in 1976.
Steve was well known for his hard-work ethic. He started his first job when he was 14 years old at the Chief Steak House, where he earned money to buy his first bike. While in high school he enjoyed working around the residents of Colonial Manor, one resident in particular became a very special friend.

Glen Mattox, Jr.

Glen Earl Mattox, Jr., was born May 3, 1944, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, the son of Glenn and Chloe Mattox.
Glen graduated from Kellogg High School in 1962, served six years in the Army and attended North Idaho College. He worked for the phone company, then the Forest Service. He married Helen Naftzger in 1966. They later divorced and Glen subsequently married Hanh Nguyen in 1980.  
Glen said he got caught sneaking into his first gun show in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, at the age of 15. He was hooked and this became his passion for the rest of his life.
