Frank R. “Hap” Schroth was born Nov. 23, 1942, and grew up the son of Rudolph and Louise Schroth. Following high school Hap went to college for five years, where he completed flight school. He became a flight instructor and crop sprayer. Hap was also the Strike Team Leader.
He married Loretta Lewis in 1960. Hap and Loretta made Buffalo Gap, S.D., their home, where he ranched alongside his family. He was the Fire Chief for the Buffalo Gap Volunteer Fire Department for 55 years. He was involved in the Fall River Sheriff Posse and a founder for the Fire Advisory Board.

Gloria Grummons

Gloria Jean (Lachelt) Grummons was born Feb. 4, 1944, in Glenwood, Pope County, Minn., to Walter Emil Lachelt and Julia Doris (Martin) Lachelt.  She attended school in Minnesota until they moved to Provo, S.D. When her mother married Ted Birdsall they moved to Igloo, S.D. She attended Provo High School in Igloo and graduated from there in 1962.
Gloria married Bruce Grummons June 2, 1962, at Igloo. To this union was born three sons: Kelly David, Paul Curtis and George Theodore Grummons.  

Mary Glass

Mary D. Glass, 58, of Custer, S.D., passed away March 22, 2022.   
Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 25 at Chamberlain McColleys Funeral Home in Custer.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 26 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hill City, S.D.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColleys Funeral Home in Custer.

Robert Larson

Robert D. “Bob” Larson was born May 18, 1941, at home in Custer, S.D. He started school at the Mayo School and later moved to town.
In 1955 he moved to Delmont, S.D., to live with an aunt and uncle on the farm. He graduated from Delmont High School in 1960. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1960-64. Bob married Virginia Haring in 1967 after he moved to Wisconsin.
Bob loved to come back to the Black Hills of South Dakota. While in the Hills, he always made time to listen to the wind blow through the pines and look for bluebirds.

Curtis Halverson

Curtis E Halverson of Rapid City, S.D., formerly of Custer, S.D., peacefully passed away March 6, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society in New Underwood., S.D. He was 92.
He was a retired member of The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, a life member of the America Legion, Elks and Knights of Columbus. He served with the Army during the Korean War.
Curt was proceeded in death by his wife of 64 years, Betty (Casper) Halverson; sons-in-law Donnie Conlon and Russ Winkler; and a special family friend, Rick Voss.

Barbara Everett

Barbara “Paddy” Everett was born July 2, 1944, in Rapid City, S.D., to Walter and Mecia (Butler) Clifford.
Paddy graduated from Custer (S.D.) High School, in 1962. She worked as a nurse aid and restorative aid for 26 years in long term care facilities, retiring in 2006. She loved her career and touched the lives of many residents and co-workers. She lived in Custer most of her life and loved the history and beauty of the Black Hills.

Claudia Speckels

Claudia J. Speckels was born July 6, 1946, in Medesto, Calif., to Marvin and Beverly (Percival) Hall. She graduated from the University of California in Santa Barbara and married Jerome “Joe” Speckels in 1970. Joe’s job required many moves and they lived in numerous places in the United States, finally settling in Custer, S.D., many years ago.
Claudia enjoyed nature and being in the outdoors.  Watching the wildlife and the sunrises and sunsets were the highlights of her day. She was a devoted wife and mother and loved her family.

Albert Duncan

Albert Wesley Duncan was born May 5, 1922, in Custer, S.D., the son of Albert Lee Duncan and Hilda Sofie Ellefsen Duncan. He attended grade school at Sanator (S.D.) and high school at Custer (S.D.) High School in South Dakota. He was active in sports where he excelled in track and field.

Connie Steen

Connie Mae (Churchill) Steen was born, raised and resided on a ranch near Fairburn, S.D.  She graduated from Rapid City (S.D.) Central High School in 1977 and continued to work on the ranch near Fairburn after graduating.
She met Mell Steen of Rapid City in 1982 and they married in 1983. Connie went from being a single woman in her early 20s, to a loving wife of Mell, and loving stepmother of two young boys, Kane and Matt. Connie and Mel added a beautiful blessing to the family in September of 1988 when their daughter Chelsea was born.

Richard Worthington

Richard F. Worthington, of Custer, S.D., passed away Feb. 23, 2022, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Hot Springs, S.D. He was 73.
Richard is survived by his wife, Marye Worthington of Custer.
Services will be held in the future at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Custer.
