Remembering Roger….
Writing Roger’s obituary is much easier said, than done. How do we condense such a rich life into a few paragraphs?
Let’s start with some indisputable facts:  Roger L. Whiting, 74, of Custer, S.D., passed away Nov. 25, 2021, at Monument Health Custer Hospital.

Lyle Cline

Lyle “Deane” Cline, or Deane, as he was known most of his life, was born May 1, 1930, to Everett Cline and Bessie Brinley, in Glendive, Mont. He grew up in Wilbaux, Mont., and attended school in Wilbaux County.
Deane had several siblings, Paul, Roland, Walter, Arlene and Dorothy. He was also married four times, to whom one of which was twice, and Alice Hagenlock was a longtime spouse of over 30 years. Deane had four sons, Robert, Ronald, Harry and Thomas, with four grandchildren, Veronica, Hugh, Ashley and Matthew.

Brenda Schneider

Brenda Lee Schneider Luedtke was born Sept. 22, 1972, in Rapid City S.D., to Jim and Monica Schneider.  She was such a bright light for all of us from the moment she was born.
Brenda attended school in Rapid City. She worked at Little Caesar’s, Landstrom’s and Riddles. She went to work for BHSSC and worked several years at the Career Learning Center, then transferred to the TIE Office division. She loved her work and was quick to learn new things on the spot as her job required.
On July 20, 1990, she was blessed with one son whom she cherished, Mike Schneider.

Sue Zeimet

Sue Laree Zeimet was born May 28, 1937, in Hot Springs, S.D., to Paul and Marian (Bowen) Vandel.
Sue, of Custer, S.D., passed away Nov.16, 2021, at Monument Health Assisted Living in Custer. She was 84.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Zeimet; and siblings, Mari Lu Kirk and Eddie Vandel.

Robert Ellison

Robert Michael Ellison was born in Boulder, Colo., Dec. 27, 1955. He was characterized as a free spirit. His adventures and work took him to many states throughout the U.S. He chose to plant roots in both Colorado and the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Mike’s hobbies included reading, hiking and enjoying God‘s great outdoors! We will remember his smile, boisterous laughter, witty sarcasm and the fact he always had an animal by his side.
Mike was ushered into the Lord’s presence from medical complications Nov. 16, 2021. He was 65.

Richard Knutson

Richard “Dick” Merlin Knutson was born May 24, 1931, in Humboldt, S.D., to Morris Oliver and Rosie Amanda (Swenson) Knutson.
He was raised on a farm near Dell Rapids, S.D., where he received his education and graduated from high school. Following high school, Dick proudly served the 82nd Infantry Division of the Army on the front lines of the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army in 1953, Dick returned to Dell Rapids and began farming.   

Pam Kury

Pam Jean (Tighe) Kury was born in Nürnberg, Germany June 20, 1956, to Paul and Joyce (Patterson) Tighe.
Pamela came from humble beginnings, which blessed her with a spirit of appreciation and gratitude for the littlest things.

Robert Piggott

Robert “Bob” Bernard Piggott was born May 8, 1942, in Parkersburg, W.V. to Arthur and Lottie (Atkinson) Piggott. He was a home builder along with his sons.
Bob enjoyed racing motorcycles and hill climbing four wheelers with his family on the weekends. He loved camping, hunting, fishing and sitting around a campfire with family and friends telling life’s stories.

Carl Bassemier, Jr.

Carl David Bassemier, Jr., or Bass, as he was known to many of his family and friends, was born Aug. 18, 1975, to Carl and Mary Bassemier (née Schatz) in Wiesbaden, Germany.
He grew up in Custer, S.D., and graduated from Custer High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1994.

Robert Nelson

Our dad, Robert William “Bob” Nelson, cruised the hallways of the nursing home one last time, just after midnight Oct. 31, 2021, teasing the nurses as usual, then laid down and went to sleep for the last time. While we regret not getting to say goodbye, we know this passing was a blessing for a man who would rather be walking in the woods than roaming the hallways.
