Museum on track to bring Christmas spirit to the heart of the hills

The 15th annual Trees and Trains exhibit is just around the corner. The annual South Dakota State Railroad Museum(SDSRM) fundraiser gives Hill City and area community members and visitors an opportunity to stroll through a Christmas wonderland filled with nostalgia of days gone past, train memorabilia, model trains, Christmas trees, and, of course, an opportunity to  visit with Santa.
Museum director Rick Mills said there are over 20 trees on display this year, including many new participants.

The library will be closed Dec. 25-9 and Jan. 1. We want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with countless blessings!
We are doing inventory making room for new library materials that we will order in 2025. 

Hill City’s Holiday Kick-Off Dec. 2

The first annual Hill City’s Holiday Kick-Off event will start the Christmas season with food, music, Santa and art Monday, Dec. 2 from 5-8 p.m. at the Hill City High School Commons. The art club is putting on the event and including other school groups.
During the event the band and choir will perform, the photography class will be doing Santa photos and the skills USA team will auction off items at the silent auction.

10 years ago, 2014 — Prices were up across the board for the buffalo offered to the highest bidder at the 49th annual Custer State Park Fall Classic Buffalo Auction, although the total money the park raised was lower than a year ago. The auction brought in $380,325, down from the previous year’s number of $476,655. Those numbers were deceiving, however, as the park sold only 224 buffalo, as compared to 324 the previous year.

10:42 a.m.: A suspicious man in a suspicious van was reportedly creeping around Custer’s north 9th Street, much to the consternation of a resident there. A deputy found the van and man nearby. The man, a local resident, claimed he had been looking to buy a house in the area and didn’t seem to be doing anything wrong.

— Trees and Trains, a Hill City Christmas staple, returned again this year. The event held at the South Dakota State Railroad Museum in Hill City kicked off Nov. 29 with free admission after the Hill City Olde Tyme Christmas Parade. “We are going to have 28 trees this year,” said Rick Mills, museum director and curator at the South Dakota State Railroad Museum. Businesses had the opportunity to sponsor a tree within the museum and decorate it. With the official kickoff over a week away, many of the trees within the museum were already decorated.

10 years ago, 2014 — Ongoing access issues on land adjacent to Forest Service land within Custer County prompted an appearance by Sherri Schwenke, Hell Canyon District Ranger, along with Scott Haas, recreation program manager for the Forest Service, at a meeting of the Custer County Commission to discuss those issues with the commission. A number of county property owners having landlocked property adjacent to U.S. Forest Service land and the Forest Service refuses to give easements across its land.

HAHA celebrates, honors veterans

The Hermosa Arts & History Association (HAHA) honored veterans and celebrated Veterans Day Saturday, Nov. 2.    Hermosa school children had written postcards to veterans. In addition to their many postcards, the public was invited to come to the HAHA building to also write postcards to be taken to the Hot Springs Veterans Hospital.
