Community Christmas set to return

Custer Community Christmas has been an event held the third Saturday of every December for nearly 30 years. It has held different names and it has been in many different venues. Volunteers have moved through the program working different spots for just one or two or many years. Here is a quick explanation of Custer Community Christmas and how it works in 2024.
The Custer Community Christmas (CCC) is a program sponsored by the Custer Ministerial Alliance (CMA).

6:19 p.m.: Some kind of scam call involving dark hints of Russian collusion and rogue intelligence agencies was received on Eagles Nest Drive near Fairburn. No money, state secrets or vodka changed hands there.

10 years ago, 2014 — It was a good night for the Republicans after sweeping the election races. In local races, Custer County voters elected incumbents Phil Lampert, Travis Bies and Jim Lintz to the county commission, each to serve a four-year term. Lampert had the highest percentage of the four with over 30 percent, while Lintz was next with 27 percent and Bies third with 22 percent. Challenger Steve Price finished with 17 percent of the vote.

Event will remember, honor Horkey

The public is invited to the Custer County Courthouse Art Gallery for the unveiling of a new art exhibit, as well as a renaming of the gallery.
“Mosaic: One man’s vision of creativity,” a Kim Horkey restrospective will take place Friday, Nov. 15, from 3-5 p.m. at the gallery, located on the second floor of the courthouse.
The art gallery has been dedicated in honor of the late Horkey, its first director and a Custer resident who promoted the creative talents of local South Dakota artists.

Call of the Week

Sunday, Oct. 20
7:11 p.m.: An out-of-state traveler called 911 to breathlessly report a person carrying an “AK-47” rifle while walking along Hwy. 16A. Some investigation found the person was, in fact, a legal hunter returning to his vehicle and the rifle in question was just a plain ‘ol huntin’ rifle.      

Paying tribute to an icon

Over 70 people packed into the Moonshine Gulch Saloon in Rochford last Sunday to pay tribute to musician Steve Thorpe. The afternoon was part tribute, part storytelling, and part jam to remember the man who many know best as a local legend who played outside the former Warrior’s Work Studio in Hill City and  gave harmonicas to children so they could play along with him.
Paul Larson began the tributes calling Thorpe an icon.
