5 YEARS AGO, 2017 — The Hill City Ranger girls golf team took home third place at the Class B state golf tournament at Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls June 5-6. Receiving the award were Shawn Woodward, Nicole Ballard, Katie Woodward, Shawna Turner, Sammy Woodward and coach Bryon Christian ... During the unveiling of the new display including a wax likeness of President Trump at the National Presidential Wax Museum in Keystone, Cooper Timm and Jeff Gillaspie portrayed secret service agents surrounding the president during the open house.

‘Odd Couple’ brings out the laughs

Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple” is playing at the Black Hills Playhouse. And despite some small opening night mic issues the production is a unique take on an old favorite.
The story is simple. Felix Unger turns to his best friend, Oscar Madison, when his 12-year marriage ends. Madison and Unger are quite different and learn to navigate together as roommates.
The comedy explores the difficulties of learning to live with another person as well as how to cope after the end of a marriage.

5 YEARS AGO, 2017 — At a Hill City Council meeting, Julie Wickware-Klein was sworn in as mayor by city attorney Frank Bettmann. She won the recent election 106 to 42. After being sworn in, Wickware-Klein thanked the attendees for voting and vowed to work hard for the good of Hill City in the future ... Bob and Barb Grow woke up one morning to find the cottonwood tree, more than a century old, that had once graced their yard on the Old Hill City Keystone Road, was down on the ground across their driveway.

Cream returns to Hill City

Stephanie Weyer was a nurse for 30 years and her husband, Greg, worked as a finish contractor. After years of hard work, Stephanie said the two wanted to do something different.

5 YEARS AGO, 2017 — All ages of hiking enthusiasts were at the spring Volksmarch at Crazy Horse Memorial on June 3-4. It was the 32nd year for the event where people traveled 10K or 6.2-miles of woodlands to see the world’s largest mountain carving in progress. On a record year there might be 15,000 people who walk the trail to Crazy Horse. This event is one of 33 sponsored by the Black Hills Volkssport Association every year.

5 YEARS AGO, 2017 — The late Mayor Dave Gray was honored on Memorial Day by the Hill City’s American Legion and the Hill City Senior Center for 35 years of service to the National Guard. A flag that was flown over the capitol in Washington, D.C. was folded by Bruce Kraemer and Paul Buschur and placed in a display box, which also contained a plaque honoring the mayor ... Hill City seventh-grader Samantha Timm sorted through her collection of stuffed animals and donated 69 bears to the Teddy Bear Town to help grow the collection.
