Driving through Custer State Park to the Playhouse Aug. 10, I was behind a few other vehicles also on their way to see the opening matinee of “Something Rotten.” It was not a sold-out show and they were still welcoming walk-ins. The Playhouse’s snack shack was especially a respite as I’d skipped lunch and thankfully the snacks are allowed inside the newly air conditioned theater.

Fishing, swimming and canoeing are just a few of the reasons people visit Horsethief Lake.
Although hardly hidden, it has some hidden features many pass by as they pass the lake on Hwy. 244.
Numerous hiking trails allow visitors to encircle the lake or explore even farther through a network that can take one to the highest point or the longest pedestrian trail in the state. There are numerous short trails that give lake access, including ramps that make the lake attainable for nearly everyone.
The Hill City Boys & Girls Club celebrated its 20th anniversary with a carnival to provide members with school supplies for the upcoming year.
The club was originally a local youth center. However, in 2002 the center board under the leadership of former mayor Dave Gray enabled the youth center to become an affiliate of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Black Hills.
Gray’s daughter Megan said, “I just thought he was doing town business. I didn’t know he was working on a place for all the kids.”
The sign outside says “Oil, Tires, Parts” but inside there’s a lot more going on.
There’s an entire network of fellowship and brotherhood taking place at Hill City Cycles, especially during Sturgis Rally week.
Inside the shop, the roar of motorcycles riding by on 385 never ceases. Yet owner Scooter Prosneski is focused, replacing two tires on a bike from Denver.
What better reason to throw a block party than to just get to know your neighbors? That’s what Dan McNamara did for the residents of the Bull Run subdivision.
Touted as “Your New Neighborhood” meet and greet barbecue, the July 10 party gave residents an opportunity to break bread and mingle amongst one another.
McNamara has had many requests from new homeowners for a list of residents so each could know who is who. He thought this was a better idea.
