Lewis “Louie” James Compton was born April 21, 1958, in Douglas, Wyo., to Lewis and Charlotte Compton.  
Louie loved his family and his friends.  He loved being in the woods, either playing or working.   His profession was forest restoration, managing trees and the forest.  
Louie, of Custer, S.D., passed away June 11, 2024, at his home in Custer. He was 66.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his daughter, Alice Madonna Compton.

John Swallow III

John Dale Swallow III was born May 8, 1963, in Pine Ridge, S.D. to John L. Swallow, Jr. and Susanna (White Wolf) Swallow.  
John was an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota Sioux Tribe (OST) and was a Fire Carrier and Tender of the Fire during ceremony. He attended Shannon County Elementary at Red Shirt, S.D., Holbrook Indian middle school in Arizona and was a 1981 graduate of Red Cloud Indian High School Pine Ridge, S.D.  He participated in boxing, wrestling, and track. In 1984 he graduated Wyoming Technical Institute in Laramie, Wyo.

Kevin Derynck

Kevin Michael Derynck was born in Marshall, Minn., to Robert (Ike) and Joan Derynck Oct. 31, 1955, and was the oldest of five children.
Kevin spent his younger years on the family farm in Tyler, Minn. The days were long and the work was hard, but little did he know this would instill in him a work ethic that would guide him through life.

Mary Owens

Mary Jane Owens was born Sept. 30, 1942, in Portland, Ore. She married Harold E. Owens Nov. 26, 1962. Together they celebrated 51 years of marriage. 
She and Harold lived in Hill City, S.D. for the past 23 years until his passing July 6, 2014. She remained there until just recently when she returned to North Platte, Neb., to be closer to her daughter and her family.

Donna Freed

Donna Freed was born to Howard and Florence (Ingwerson) Neff Jan. 13, 1930, in Lodgepole, Neb. She lived in Denver, Colo., and then Albuquerque, N.M,. for most of her life. 
When her health began to decline in October 2020, she moved to Hill City, S.D., to be cared for by her nieces, Georgie Neff and Sue Jarvis.  She was always tickled when she attended functions with them in town and so many people talked to her and called her by name. 
Donna was moved to an assisted living six months ago where she passed away April 19, 2024, at the age of 94.

Maxine Mills

Maxine Elaine Mills was born in Rapid City, S.D., to Clifford Oney and Minnie Craven Dec. 6, 1924. She went to high school in Rapid City,  S.D., later graduating from the University of New Mexico. She worked as a nurse for the Indian Health Service for 35 years starting at Sioux Sanitorium, then later throughout Alaska, Arizona and New Mexico.
Maxine, of Hill City, S.D., and previously of Grantz, N.M., passed away on March 6, 2024. She was 99.

Sandra Scott

Sandra Sue Scott was born Sept. 1, 1950, in Waukegan, Ill., the oldest of three girls of Lewis William and Bernyce Ann (Tracy) Stilwell.
Sandy’s family has deep ties to the Baha’i Faith. In 1937, her grandmother, Margaret Russell Tracy, worked at a factory assembling fur coats, where she started investigating the faith through a coworker at the age of 48 and became a Baha’i – this faith was shared across generations, including Sandy who embraced the Baha’i Faith at the age of 18.

Lewis Compton

Lewis Junior Compton was born Sept. 25, 1930, to Lewis and Eva Compton on the head of Spring Creek on a ranch, now known as the Medicine Mountain Boy Scout Camp.
Lewis grew up on his father’s ranch near Moon, S.D. He served in the U.S. Army until his honorable discharge in 1955, receiving the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and a Bronze Star. He married Charlotte Sutton of Albion, Neb., June 16, 1957.

Iva Henderson

Iva Corrine Henderson, 94, of Rapid City, S.D., passed away Dec. 27, 2023.
Services will be held Jan. 2 at First Baptist Church in Rapid City.
A public visitation will be at 9:30 a.m, funeral service at 10 a.m. and burial at 12:15 p.m. at Mt. View Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Kirk Funeral Home.
